Au pair in Dublin

Being an au pair in Dublin means that you get the opportunity to learn English, and experience the unique Irish culture first hand, by living with a host family in Dublin.

You will become part of the family and be treated as an equal, after all the title does come from the French term au pair, meaning "on a par" or "equal to"! The family will provided you with accommodation, which saves you the hassle of finding a place to stay in a new city, and you are also immediately part of a family, who, along with the support of the agency, will help you adjust to a new way of life, and help you find your way around, etc. You are also provided with all your meals and pocket money. In return you will provide part time childcare duties, and some basic housekeeping.

Not only will you be broadening your horizons, learning a new language and developing independence but also you will make friends and take with you a special memory that will last a lifetime.

What is Ireland like?

Ireland is the third largest island in Europe, and the twentieth largest in the world.

The island has lush vegetation due to its mild but changeable oceanic climate, with temperatures reaching 20˚ C in summer and 8˚ C in winter.
The population of Ireland is estimated to be 6.2 million people, with just fewer than 4.5 million in the Republic of Ireland and just fewer than 1.8 million in Northern Ireland. A strong indigenous culture exists, as can be seen for example through native sports, such as Gaelic Football and Hurling, traditional Irish music and dancing and the Irish language. Irish culture is accompanied by Western culture, such as contemporary music and drama, and sports such as football, rugby and golf.

What should I expect when becoming an au pair in Dublin?

You will have your own private room, possibly with a TV and computer, you will have all your meals provided and you will be treated as an equal by your host family. The family will give you between €100 and €200 pocket money per week. You will also receive support from Careway, which includes a welcome pack (including details of au pairs in your area), information on English schools in your area and an au pair certificate and reference at the end of your stay.

What will my job as an au pair involve?

You will look after the children for approx 30 hours per week depending on you position. During this time you will play with them, engage them in activities, take them on outings and help with light housework. You will also babysit for the family 2 evenings per week.

What will my schedule be like?

  • One full weekend off per month (ie Friday evening to Monday morning)
  • Bank Holiday weekends off
  • 30 hours per week maximum
  • 2 evenings of babysitting per week maximum
  • 2 half days off during the week, or one full day
  • 5 free evenings per week
  • 1 full day off every weekend
  • One week paid holiday per 6 months.

What do I need to be an au pair in Dublin?

You should have some childcare experience. This can be experience in full time childcare, working at a childcare centre, volunteering in your community, teaching experience, etc. You will need contact details of someone who can provide a reference for you, and written references are advantageous.

Whatever your level of experience, it is imperative that you have a genuine interest in children, and that you are dedicated, responsible, kind and caring.

Although you are probably coming to Ireland to learn English, you should have some basic vocabulary, so that you can communicate with the family. If you would like a guideline of what is expected, use the A1 level on the Global Scale of Common Reference Levels.

Most families will want a commitment for between 6 and 12 months, although summer au pairs are needed for 1 to 3 months from July to September.
Lastly, you must be in good health, and have no criminal record.
